My love of improvisation started in graduate school with my first introduction to Keith Johnstone's Impro. "Ten minutes is the attention span of bored children, which is what they usually are in school- hence the misbehaviour." This simple phrase, and the rest of the book which supports this idea, propelled my philosophy in the classroom and led me to study with Johnstone in the summer of 2007. From there I developed a 5-week special topics course and then a semester-long improvisational acting course at Adams State. I continued to pursue improvisation training in Chicago at Second City.
In the spring of 2011, I founded a comedy improv troupe at Adams, which has grown to include three practice sessions a week, monthly performances in the troupe's home theatre, and invited performances throughout the years. They have travelled to high schools to perform and lead workshops.
In the spring of 2014, I led a group of 8 students to study for a week long immersion on long form improvisation at Second City Chicago. While there the troupe was able to improve their long form structure considerably, all while taking in the sights and sounds of the city. I repeated the trip with new groups of students in the spring of 2016 and 2018. COVID interrupted a scheduled trip in 2020 but we returned to Chicago in the spring of 2022.
I also performed during the summer of 2019 with Creede Repertory Theatre's musical improv troupe, Boomtown. I hope to continue to perform with them in the future.
Below are links to some of the performances of my troupe, ASU's The Lost and Found. The first three are long form structures that the troupe has created in recent years. More videos can be viewed on The Lost and Found's youTube site here.
